Combined Sailing Programme in association with the
New Zealand National Maritime Museum.
Programme Overview
No trip to the waterfront is complete without getting out on the harbour! This programme has two key parts:
• An on-the-water yachting experience aboard a 50 foot Pride of Auckland mono-hull yacht
• A session on the principles of sailing in the NZ National Maritime Museum Hall of Yachting
Sailing Experience
Two qualified crew members take students and supervisors through safety procedures, demonstrate sailing basics, discuss racing tactics and provide commentary on the points of interest. Whilst sailing, students are able to helm the yacht and trim the sails.
The optimum number of students is between 10 and 15 per vessel (4 yachts in the fleet) but they can take up to 18, with 3 supervisors. This is a 60 minute cruise. Wet weather gear is provided. There is a spacious cockpit and a below deck cabin is available.
Sailing Principles
Following on from the practical sailing experience, this session takes place in the NZ National Maritime Museum Hall of Yachting. The museum collection of small yachts is used to explore, in depth, key components of sailing - different types of rig, sail shape, keel configuration and points of sailing.
This session is approximately 45-60 minute duration.
